| Tales of tax cab drivers
What ever happened to the New Yorker as hard-bitten, arrogant, looker-out-for-No. 1? Last month, a guy risked his life saving a man who'd fallen on subway tracks. Now we have cab driver Osman Chowdhury, who found 31 diamond rings inside a suitcase left in his cab. He spent hours tracking down the woman, who turned out to be, not a person with a serious commitment problem, but a jeweler from Dallas. This despite the fact, that the woman had given him a $20 bill for a $10.70 fare and asked for $9 change. That's a 30-cent (3 percent) tip, folks, proving that not everything Texan is big. The woman, for obvious reasons, preferred to remain anonymous and may well be getting a facelift. She did thank the man with a $100 reward. Mr. Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi immigrant who works 12 hours a day, seven days a week, declined at first, but later accepted it to cover fares lost while he tracked down Ms.
Stemcell technique helps women grow their own implants
Women have grown their own breast implants through pioneering stem cell treatment, it emerged yesterday. Scientists harvested the stem cells from the women's own fat and encouraged them to form breast tissue. They say the result gives a more natural look than many of the synthetic implants used by showbusiness stars like Pamela Anderson. The Japanese teams have carried out trials on dozens of women and say they have had no problems. They say the treatment will be routinely available from plastic surgeons within five years. British surgeons said yesterday they were convinced by the technique and found it "appealing". Stem cells can turn into different tissues in the body and this technique involves taking them from fat.
Plastic Surgery Replacing Lifestyle Improvements
Brits are increasingly ignoring advice to tackle lifestyle concerns and are instead turning to liposuction to achieve their desired figure. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 3,086 liposuction procedures were carried out last year, representing an astonishing rise of 90 per cent from 2005. Liposuction is now the third most popular procedure in the UK, up from eighth in 2005.But Rajiv Grover, a consultant plastic surgeon, has warned the general public that it is simply foolish to turn to plastic surgery to correct a weight problem. "It is important to note that liposuction and tummy tucks are not a treatment for weight management or obesity: they are body contouring procedures for patients near or already at their ideal body weight," he added. The BAAPS has revealed that 28,921 surgical procedures were carried out by its members in 2006, in comparison to just 22,041 in 2005.
Understanding your cat
Some cat behaviors are unmistakable: An arched back and hissing means the cat doesn't want to be messed with. A twitching tail (short, quick movements) and pricked ears demonstrates your cat is extremely interested in something. Sometimes our cats' behavior may be puzzling. Here are a few ideas to help us communicate better with our cats.Q: Why does my cat rub herself against my legs or knead me with her paws? A: Leg rubbing is a way for cats to mark the household, including their owners, with pheromones produced by glands in their faces. Even though we think cats are anti-social, they find comfort in the "group odor." Cats might also rub because it often leads to being petted. Behaviorists aren't quite sure why cats knead, but it's obviously a comforting behavior.Q: What else can my cat's tail tell me? .
