More men opt for cosmetic surgery to improve careers

Gulfnews, Nov 4 - Beauty may be only skin deep, but more men in the UAE are going under the knife to get ahead professionally.

Plastic surgeons here are reporting an increase in surgical and non-surgical procedures for men, which they attributed largely to their patients' career concerns in the competitive work environment here.

Better looking people are more likely to make more money and be more successful than their less attractive and short colleagues, according to studies done in the US and UK.

Dr Mohan Rangasarmy, specialist plastic surgeon at Welcare Hospital, told Gulf News that he has had patients who underwent procedures to look "more energetic".

"I had a guy last week who has a good job but people said he always looked tired.

Customer care also means caring for data

Margaret E. "Lyn" McDermid takes her job extremely seriously. You should be thankful.

As chief information officer at Dominion Resources Inc., she's in charge of putting in place a technology infrastructure, rules and policies on how customer information is managed so your personal records are protected at the state's largest utility company.

"As a major corporation, we have a significant responsibility to all stakeholders to protect informa- tion about them that is within our system," she said. "We take it very seriously, as a matter of obligations, responsibility and good business."

When an organization misplaces personal information on its customers or has that data hacked, the fallout is major.

"I don't want to overblow it, but if you get the reputation in the industry that you don't take care of the customers' data, then other companies aren't going to want to do business with you," said Kevin Pomfret, an attorney at Cantor Arkema in Richmond who specializes in corporate law.

Facelift underway

The facelift of Ararat's central business district is underway.

The million dollar project will see Barkly Street rejuvenated and brought into the 21st century, after Ararat Rural City Council received government funding to complete the footpath project, which stretches from the Midland Complex on the corner of Barkly and Queen Streets through to Taylor Street.

Public consultation made up a large part of deciding on the final design, with the Streetscape Forum inviting the public to a number of meetings, and presentations held for the Ararat Regional Business Association.

The project will be completed in four stages, with the first getting underway in the last week. This stage will involve completion of the south side of Barkly Street from the Midland Complex to Viewpoint Street.

New Minimally Invasive Procedures for Treating Aging Skin

When people think of facelifts, images of aging Hollywood stars with their faces pulled as tight as their red carpet gowns might come to mind. In fact, patients considering cosmetic surgery may be concerned about the sometimes pulled, unnatural look that results from facelifts. Now, a growing trend among dermatologists is to combine minimally invasive procedures to tone, tighten and plump aging skin, creating a more natural, younger look with less risk and recovery time than a traditional surgical facelift.

Speaking at the 65th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, dermatologist Michael S. Kaminer, discussed the benefits of some of the latest minimally invasive cosmetic procedures and how dermatologists determine what combination will work best for each individual patient.

The Path to Weight Loss

Achieving weight loss and body improvement may appear simple, but with so many different programs and techniques available, the average individual must study and evaluate which plan best suits their needs. When starting a weight loss program, you should first consult a physician to assess your overall health and rule out medical conditions that might be contributing to weight gain such as diabetes or hormonal imbalances. From changes in eating habits, to non-surgical as well as medical procedures, men and women have several alternatives to attain weight loss as well as achieve the body form and shape they desire. Of course the success of any program will not only depend upon the method utilized, but upon the dedication of the individual. The simplest, yet often the most difficult weight loss program to initiate are changes in diet.
