Implants still not safe

THE FOOD and Drug Administration recently approved the use of silicone gel implants for use in breast augmentation. However, the FDA's stamp of approval doesn't mean implants are safe. There remain considerable risks that women must consider before walking into the operating room.

We have heard from hundreds of women who have struggled with health problems they believed to be the direct result of their silicone breast implants. One woman was hospitalized with serious symptoms that subsided only after her silicone implants were removed. Other women have repeatedly mentioned such problems as connective tissue disease, chronic fatigue, dizziness, and various pain-inducing muscular deformities.

Beyond anecdotal evidence, the FDA's own research concludes silicone gel implants will eventually break, most within 10 years.

Ramstein control tower gets facelift

1/30/2007 - RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (AFNEWS) -- Ramstein AB air traffic controllers left their 10-story tower in January for a one-story MSN-7 mobile control tower. During the next few weeks, the air traffic control tower will receive approximately $313,000 in upgrades that will transform the 1952 tower. "My pledge is to provide our outstanding Airmen with a 21st century airfield operations facility they deserve," said Lt. Col. Nelson Johnson, the 86th Operations Support Squadron commander. "Refurbishing the tower takes us one step closer to achieving this goal." .

Field to Get New Surface, But What Kind Will It Be?

Hanover -- Dartmouth's Scully-Fahey Field is due for a facelift. The question is whether the new mug will be clean-shaven or stubbly.

The main venue for Big Green field hockey and lacrosse since 2000 will be the beneficiary of a new playing surface this summer, after the lacrosse teams have wrapped up the 2007 season.

But the only thing known about the nature of the next surface is it won't be natural. Dartmouth athletics administrators have yet to decide whether to roll out another Astroturf carpet -- favored by the field hockey set -- or an infill turf system similar to the one installed at Memorial Field last September.

“That is the great debate,” said Dartmouth senior associate athletics director Brian Austin, who did not divulge a timetable for the final decision.

Liposuction Helps Some African American Women Avoid Unsightly ...

Because of adverse scarring prone to darker-skinned patients, some African American women may choose not to have breast reduction.

Instead, these women live with the daily pain and physical restraint caused by overly large breasts. According to a study in February's Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(R), the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), liposuction breast reduction may offer African American women a scarless alternative.

"African American women, like all women, want relief from the physical ailments associated with overly large breasts; the difference is that darker skin is prone to develop keloid and hypertrophic scars," said Sherwood Baxt, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and study author. "Through this less invasive procedure, patients experienced no scarring, a decrease or elimination of physical symptoms, and an increase in self-esteem and quality-of-life.
