More American men seeking nip n' tuck

WASHINGTON: Once considered a woman's domain, cosmetic surgery is increasingly attracting American men intent on looking fitter and younger.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the total number of cosmetic procedures on men grew by 16 per cent between 2000 and 2005, with breast reduction, tummy tuck, lip augmentation, eyelid surgery and liposuction among the most popular.

Breast reduction surgery, for example, increased by 17 per cent between 2004 and 2005, and liposuction by 10 per cent. Tummy tuck surgeries grew by 37 per cent and lip augmentation jumped by 61 per cent between in the same period. Since 2000, tummy tucks are up 156 per cent, and lip augmentations skyrocketed by 458 per cent.

"It's much more acceptable in society today for men to seek plastic surgery," said Phillip Haeck, a plastic surgeon in the western U.S.

Hip resurfacing here in Bradenton

Instead of "out with the old, in with the new," a new treatment for hip pain preserves part of the old.

Hip resurfacing, an alternative to hip replacement for the younger set of patients with hip problems, preserves more bone than traditional hip surgery. It also allows patients to do more activity-wise, says Dr. Alan Valadie of Coastal Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Bradenton.

Valadie performs the new Birmingham Hip Resurfacing technique, which he says isn't all that different from hip replacement surgery. He is the only doctor in Manatee and Sarasota counties trained in the procedure.

"Hip resurfacing is not that much of a stretch from hip replacement," he says. "If you're a hip surgeon, it's not a big stretch to do this operation."

Island PSAL teams brace for schedule changes

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island's PSAL softball and girls' soccer divisions will undergo a scheduling facelift this spring, the Advance has learned.

For several seasons now, the Island's seven-team softball division has used an 18-game schedule in which the teams faced each other three times apiece during the regular season.

However, under the new schedule, not only will the teams play each other only twice, but each Island squad will also play an unbalanced, four-game schedule against teams from Brooklyn.

In the girls' PSAL soccer division, New Dorp and Port Richmond, which have struggled in the Island's division for several years now, will play in a newly formed Brooklyn/Staten Island B division this year.

PSAL assistant softball commissioner Yakira Cordero confirmed, through PSAL sports coordinator Danny Harris, that the four games Island teams play against Brooklyn competition will count in the overall division standings.

You'll have to cook your daughter's left kidney

Morgan, the oldest privately owned car company in the world, does things at its own pace. So when, in March 2000 the marque revealed its first new model since 1968, it was bound to cause a bit of a stir.

For some it was the new car’s rather ungainly headlights that made them sit up and take notice; for others the BMW V8 engine that nestled beneath the long bonnet. But whatever it was that made the Morgan a talking point, one thing was for sure; no British car manufacturer had ever built something quite like the new Morgan Aero 8. Nearly seven years on and the Aero 8 remains Morgan’s newest model. TVR and Rover may have hit the skids but nothing as dramatic has happened at Morgan’s Malvern factory. The intervening years have seen a mellowing of the car’s rather boss-eyed headlamps thanks to a mild facelift in 2006, and the already powerful engine has been blessed with even more power.
