| Man mauled by puma to have surgery in S.F.
SAN FRANCISCO - The 70-year-old man who was attacked and scalped by a mountain lion last Wednesday will undergo major surgery in San Francisco this morning to replace vital tissue he lost in the attack. Jim Hamm was transferred Sunday to California Pacific Medical Center from Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata, 30 miles south of where he was attacked. He is fighting a deadly flesh-eating bacterial infection from the cat's saliva. “After monitoring his condition closely, we decided he was stable enough to move him on to a more specialized center," said Tom Ayotte, spokesman for Mad River Community Hospital.
Huge rise in liposuction operations
Experts have warned that liposuction is not a cure for obesity following a 90 per cent rise in the number of people having the operation. Figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), show that 3,986 liposuctions were carried out last year - up from 2,099 in 2005. It has jumped from being the eighth most popular cosmetic procedure to the third most popular, behind breast and eyelid surgery. Rajiv Grover, consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS Council member, said: 'Judging by the dramatic rise in certain procedures, it is clear we are becoming a more body-image conscious society. ‘However, it is important to note that liposuction and tummy tucks are not a treatment for weight management or obesity: they are body contouring procedures for patients near or already at their ideal body weight.' Anti-ageing ops BAAPS, which is based at the Royal College of Surgeons, said other operations - such as breast surgery and nose jobs - had also seen a rise.
Fido fatties
Tiger, a black poodle that tipped the scales at 30 pounds last August, used to scarf down a cup of kibble each morning and night, forage for acorns between meals and get a tasty treat or two each day. Not surprisingly, this sluggish canine that liked to lounge in his Lumberton backyard had a weight problem. Tiger, a dieting dog that has lost about seven pounds since he began eating low-calorie food in August, is in good company: an estimated 40 percent of about 42 million dogs that are pets in the United States are overweight, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Concerned pet owners gained a new weapon in the war on dog corpulence last week when the Food and Drug Administration approved the first-ever doggie diet pill. Slentrol, a prescription drug that will be available from veterinarians in the spring, will suppress Tiger's appetite while also blocking the absorption of fat from his food, according to medication maker Pfiser Inc.
Estate in Jamaica where Fleming wrote James Bond novels to get ...
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) - Goldeneye, the scenic rural retreat in eastern Jamaica where British author Ian Fleming created James Bond, is getting a facelift. Work begins in June on 82 villas, cottages and suites at the 40-hectare property overlooking a harbour in St. Mary parish, Jason Henzell, president of luxury hotelier Island Outpost, said Monday. Henzell said Goldeneye's current owner, media mogul Chris Blackwell - who is also the owner of Island Outpost - wants to use the property for tourism. "He wants to develop a new niche in Jamaica called residential tourism, where people buy land, visit and ultimately promote the island," he said Monday. He declined to comment on the project's cost. Fleming bought Goldeneye in the mid-1940s when it spanned just 16 hectares and wrote several books there.
