The new face of cosmetic surgery is less invasive

That face-lift that leaves you looking as if you're standing on the prow of a ship in a stiff breeze is so 20th century.

True, more than 10.2 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures are performed annually, a number that's increasing by about 10 percent a year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

"For many, cosmetic plastic surgery is the new take on 'growing old gracefully,' " says Dr. Bruce Cunningham, ASPS president.

But the types of procedures are changing. For the first time in many years, the numbers of face-lifts are declining, he says. Instead, there is consumer demand for minimally invasive, injectable wrinkle fillers that, in theory, combat facial aging, Cunningham says.

"I see this whole beauty industry going toward skin.

Plastic surgery smack down

Sure, Janet Jackson's plastic-surgery-enhanced nose looks good -- if you compare it to siblings Michael and LaToya. By most standards, though, the nose looks overdone and, well, plastic. But if Miss Jackson's nasty nose is an example of the "bad," to whom do we look for the "good"?

Ashlee Simpson. Her fans debate whether or not she should have tinkered with the "I Am Me" original version, but most onlookers would agree that the surgery itself was a success. Rumored to have undergone a new, less-invasive form of surgery that requires less time to heal, the difference is dramatic yet natural.

Gains in the games

The announcement that York County gets to host the Keystone State Summer Games through 2010 is a major plus for the area in so many ways.

Economically, the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau estimates the extension of the games through the new three-year term here is worth around $24 million.

That's no small change, for the county at large, and for the city struggling to draw more visitors downtown and to the new baseball stadium under construction.

The 2007 games, billed as the largest amateur athletic event in the state, will be held July 24-29 in York.

The games were chartered by the state Legislature in 1980 to promote physical fitness and sports activity.

While here, the games could undergo a facelift of a sort, with the possible addition of new competitions that might include bocce, disc golf, dodgeball and adult kickball.

New Medical Devices Improve Care

Nurse Lisa Speney, R.N., routinely pokes and prods patients who need chemotherapy or other drugs, but she'd welcome anything that would help her find the right spot. Her ideal? "A nice big X-ray machine that you can put over someone's arm so you know exactly where to go," she says.

If you're sick, chances are you're going to have a procedure that you'll probably find uncomfortable. Two of the most common are catheters in the skin to deliver drugs and a tube down the throat to see what's going on.

Now, a new device called the Sonic Flashlight can help. It allows doctors to see inside a patient's skin and locate their target vein.

"You look through the mirror at the patient, and you can see a reflective display floating inside the patient," George Stetten, M.D., a biomedical engineer at Carnegie Mellon/University of Pittsburgh, tells Ivanhoe.
