Ultra mobile PCs to get Vista facelift

Origami, the top-secret Microsoft project that became the Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC), was finally unveiled last March, and devices utilizing the new form factor appeared shortly thereafter. The UMPC is a full Windows PC with a small touch-screen display and a virtual keyboard, and despite issues with short battery life, the early units were impressive. Now, Microsoft has announced a major upgrade for the young UMPC, which it calls the "Origami Experience."

The new Origami Experience replaces the old Program Launcher, and sports a fancy new Vista-inspired look. There's more than just a face lift, however, as the new interface has been largely redesigned to make it easier to access with finger presses. The Home screen divides the user's activities into Music, Videos, Pictures, and Programs, and can be returned to with a single touch of the icon in the upper left corner.

Paris mulls surgery for eyelid

PARIS Hilton is considering plastic surgery to correct her drooping left eyelid, it has been claimed.

The hotel heiress allegedly paid a recent visit to a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon's office with her sister Nicky to make enquiries.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "She wanted to fix her drooping left eyelid."

Paris, 25, (currently working up to ten hours a day filming new movie The Hottie and the Nottie) has apparently been aggravating the problem by wearing tinted contact lenses.

The Simple Life star has naturally brown eyes but has always worn blue tinted contact lenses to keep up her Barbie-style image.

The source said: "Her eyes have been drying out lately. She is ignoring doctors' orders not to wear her tinted contacts."

Paris' representative Elliot Mintz said: "To the best of my knowledge, Paris has never had any kind of cosmetic surgery and has not mentioned any medical procedures having to do with her eyes."

TvT, RTD set for facelift

THE Televisheni ya Taifa (TvT) and Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam (RTD) are to be reorganised within the next 18 months, in a move designed to enhance competitiveness of the state-owned institution in dissemination of programmes, it was announced in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Tanzania Broadcasting Services (TUT) Managing Director Dunstan Tido Mhando said the reorganisation also entailed improvement of working conditions by provision of better working tools.

"TvT and RTD are currently operating in unpleasant and difficult conditions," Mr Mhando told a news conference at the Tanzania Information Services auditorium.

He said the two institutions were operating from dilapidated buildings that need refurbishment and better working tools.

"I promise that all these problems will be solved within 18 months," Mr Mhando, a renowned broadcaster and the former head of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Kiswahili Service, told journalists.

Broadway baby

Jessica Lee Goldyn of Parsippany spent many years studying and teaching at Worth-Tyrrell Studios before being cast in "A Chorus Line" on Broadway. She will return to the performing arts school in Morristown Sunday to teach a master class.

The class serves as an introduction to the studio's own annual production of "A Chorus Line." Worth-Tyrrell holds an 18-week workshop for teens and adults, providing training for advanced musical comedy students.

Caroline Worth-Tyrrell, co-owner of the school, said it's a good forerunner for new people and performers who repeat it five or six times before each annual production.

"Even if people have never gone to the studio or never been in the studio, it's a good opportunity for everyone," Goldyn said by phone from New York City, where she takes the stage for eight performances a week as "Val" in the Broadway revival of the show.
