Residents vote for illuminated walkway in facelift

A walkway of illuminated, multi-coloured glass panels will form the centrepiece of a £250,000 makeover for the heart of Barton.

Residents living on the Oxford estate voted for the glass panel design, which features three panels either side of a walkway leading to the shops at Underhill Circus.

The illuminated panels will contain about 300 different pictures, many created by children from Barton during workshops held on the estate in the past few months.

Residents were asked to come up with designs loosely connected to the area and the final designs related to the estate's history.

A total of 97 people voted on three different schemes, with the glass panels design winning almost 50 per cent of the vote. The runner-up was a scheme to build a triumphal arch as an entrance leading down to an amphitheatre in front of the Underhill Circus shops.

Billboards and baby boomers

Piaggio, the manufacturer of the legendary Vespa, reintroduced its flagship product four years ago after a 15-year absence. It was surprised to discover then that 25 percent of buyers in the U.S. market were people aged 50 or older. Not exactly the target market it had expected.

Here are a few more surprising facts about the 50-plus group: They don't just buy Vespas, but also 25 percent of the toys in the U.S.; they like to switch brands like socks; they love gyms and are interested in cosmetic surgery; they hold around 70 percent of the disposable income in the U.S. and Israel.

Breast Cancer Treatment Cut To One Day

Radiation treatment is often necessary for breast cancer patients to ensure remaining cancer cells don't come back after a lumpectomy. It can be painful, time consuming, and emotionally and physically draining. Now, a new therapy cuts treatment time from several weeks to one day.

June McNamee counts her family among her many blessings. They were her lifeline when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. What she dreaded most? Weeks of intensive radiation.

Radiation Seeds For Breast Cancer

"My son's next-door neighbor had breast cancer, and had radiation," said June. "She had skin discoloration, and she had burning."

So June jumped at the chance to join a clinical trial testing a new therapy. Instead of going in for weeks of intense radiation, June was injected with permanent radiation implants.
